Flash Forward

So, I am into this new show on ABC called Flash Forward.

The premise of the show is this…everyone on earth has lost consciousness for approximately 137 seconds. During that time, everyone had a “flash forward” of their life in six months, where they actually saw what was going to happen to them. Each episode untangles clues as to why the mass loss of consciousness and premonitions have happened, what this all means, “whodunit,” and if this will happen again in the future.

After two episodes, I am completely hooked! The structure of the show enables the viewers to step into the scenes and ask “What if?”

What if we were all given a glimpse into our future?

I wonder what we would do differently, if anything. I wonder where and who we might invest in that we are not currently taking the time to.

However, as I watch the Flash Forward crew investigate possible futures and probe into different reasons the flash forward might have occurred, I am struck with the possibility that the future may occur because we participate in it happening. Meaning, how much of our future is determined, and how much to we participate in making happen?

There is a notable absence of theological presenceĀ in Flash Forward.

There are doctors and lawyers and FBI and every occupation imaginable, but as of yet, there has been no theologian! No priest or pastor to discuss the theological implications of knowing your future, and no one to represent God’s opinion on the matter.

There is an absence of discussions of God and theology, yet, there is a theological, existential undertone to this show that cannot be ignored.

This show causes you to ask some questions, but does not provide many answers.

I wonder how we might look at Jeremiah 29.11 if something like this were to happen here on earth. Would it still have the same meaning or not?

“For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future…”

  1. I have gotten hooked on ABC’s Flash Forward. I pretty much asked myself the same questions. My post can be found here.
